Playgrounds & Parks going Smoke-Free - The Right Way

Comments:    Add Comment

Councils are installing Eco-Pole Ashtrays to eliminate cigarette butt litter near childrens playgroundsAs society continues to toughen smoking laws, more and more parks and playgrounds are being declared Smoke-Free - but there's a right way - and a wrong way to implement Smoke-Free locations.

The right way is to acknowledge the reality that people are going to smoke one way or the other - and to provide them with the ability to properly dispose of their butts in an ashtray. These areas are usually divided into two catagories:

Designated Smoking Zone
If you smoke, please smoke in this area only and dispose of your butts in the ashtray.

Butt Out Zone
If you smoke, please smoke away from this area and then dispose of your butts in the ashtray.

Both these methods significantly reduce - and in most cases virtually eliminate cigarette butt litter at that location.

Ignoring your smokers Cigarette Butt Litter is like telling the planet to get stuffed
The wrong way is to ignore the fact that just because an area may have gone Smoke-Free, its smokers haven't - and that they're going to smoke with or without appropriate butt disposal infrastructure. This method guarantees not only an increase in cigarette butt litter but also the risk of fires started from discarded butts.

7% of Australia's bushfires are caused by discarded cigarettes - that's over 4,500 fires a year caused by cigarettes and smoking materials.

Over 2,000 Local, State & Federal Government Departments around the world have adopted No BuTTs Eco-Pole Wall/Post Ashtrays & Freestanding/Bollard Ashtrays - and No BuTTs Personal/Portable/Pocket Ashtrays - to reduce cigarette butt litter and the rsik of fires within their communities.

Many of those Eco-Pole Ashtrays are increasingly being installed near the entrances to childrens playgrounds.

It's not hard to see why Eco-Pole Ashtrays are now the world's best selling Wall & Post-mounted Ashtrays."Apart from the obvious negative environmental issues of cigarette butt litter, it's a horrible example for any children to witness smokers littering their butts. Most smokers with kids are responsible and at home smoke outside and away from their kids, and they discreetly put their butts into an ashtray or their garbage bin." said No BuTTs Managing Director, Jack Jacobson.

"But when they're out and about and litter their butts, people do notice - and kids see everything."

"Installing Eco-Pole Wall & Post Ashtrays gives smokers the ability to do the right thing with their butts and that's good for everyone and the environment. In the case of children's playgrounds the priority is to maintain a safe and healthy place for them to play in. Obviously this includes eliminating cigarette butt litter - and the actual act of littering."
